Background of the study

Social media has emerged as a dynamic platform where language evolves and adapts to new forms of digital communication. In Lagos, Twitter is not only a space for public opinion but also a site where indigenous linguistic features, such as Yoruba phonology, are increasingly evident. Yoruba, with its rich tonal system and distinct phonetic characteristics, has traditionally influenced local oral and written traditions. In recent years, researchers have begun exploring how these phonological traits are embedded in tweets, resulting in a hybrid linguistic style that reflects both cultural identity and modern communication trends (Ogunyemi, 2023). The study examines how traditional Yoruba sound patterns, including vowel harmony and tonal inflections, are modified or maintained in the fast-paced environment of Twitter discourse. Moreover, it investigates how users negotiate meaning through phonological adaptation in contexts that include code-switching with English and other languages. The digital space thus becomes a laboratory where language preservation and innovation occur simultaneously. As Lagos continues to be a nexus for cultural and technological transformation, understanding this interplay is crucial for both sociolinguistic theory and practical communication strategies in digital media (Adebola, 2024; Babatunde, 2025). The study situates itself within the broader debates on language evolution, addressing gaps in how indigenous languages are recontextualized in modern media, and highlights the relevance of phonological studies in a digitally interconnected society.

Statement of the problem

Despite growing interest in digital linguistics, there remains limited research on how Yoruba phonology is represented on social media platforms. Twitter, with its character limits and rapid exchanges, forces linguistic users to adapt traditional phonological features, potentially leading to misinterpretation or dilution of meaning. The current literature has not adequately addressed the challenges posed by digital orthography in preserving tonal and phonetic nuances (Ogunyemi, 2023). Additionally, the role of user creativity in maintaining cultural identity through language remains underexplored. The phenomenon poses significant questions about language standardization versus natural evolution in online discourse. This study, therefore, aims to bridge the gap by analyzing how Yoruba phonological elements manifest in Twitter trends in Lagos, addressing issues related to language change, identity, and digital communication efficacy (Adebola, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

1. To analyze the manifestation of Yoruba phonological features in Twitter discourse.

2. To assess the impact of these features on the clarity and interpretation of social media communication.

3. To propose recommendations for preserving indigenous phonological nuances in digital media.

Research questions:

1. How are Yoruba phonological features represented in Twitter trends in Lagos?

2. What influence do these features have on the interpretation of digital discourse?

3. How can social media platforms support the preservation of Yoruba phonology?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it contributes to our understanding of how traditional linguistic elements are maintained and transformed in digital communication. By focusing on Yoruba phonology within Twitter discourse, the research offers insights into the broader implications for cultural identity and language preservation in a rapidly globalizing world. The findings may inform educators, linguists, and policymakers on strategies to balance modern communication needs with the preservation of indigenous linguistic heritage, thus enhancing both academic scholarship and practical applications in media literacy (Babatunde, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

This study focuses solely on the impact of Yoruba phonology on Twitter discourse in Lagos. It does not consider other social media platforms or linguistic variations beyond Yoruba phonological features, nor does it extend to offline language practices.

Definitions of terms:

1. Phonology: The systematic organization of sounds in languages.

2. Social Media Discourse: The language and communication patterns observed on digital platforms.

3. Yoruba: A major Nigerian language characterized by its tonal and phonological structures.
